The sirtuins SIRT3 and SIRT5 support mitochondrial function specifically within fibroblasts, maintaining the cellular energy needed for collagen synthesis and secretion.
Collagen synthesis is an energy-intensive process. Fibroblasts need significant amounts of ATP to produce, fold and secrete collagen molecules.
